Walks on Dartmoor

Apologies for being away from the computer for a while. To start with I was experiencing a few issues with the speed of internet connection. In part I think it is my computer . . . I so need to upgrade! Anyway, as it has been half-term here I took the opportunity to get away for a few days . Hubs and I love to head off to Dartmoor to do some walking and just enjoy some peace and quiet. I think autumn is the perfect time to visit. The moor looks so beautiful carpeted in shades of browns and gold. I thought I'd share a few of my favourite photos here.

First, stop was Scorhill Stone Circle near Gidleigh. We walked here from the cottage we rented for a few days. It was late afternoon and the sun was going down. It was very peaceful. A few cows wandered past but we just sat in the circle and enjoyed the view.

Close to where we were staying was Fernworthy Resevoir. We have visited here before but decided to re-visit as we heard it was at it's lowest level for 40 years. The low water level revealed parts of  a bronze age settlement, stone circles and a bridge. It made for an interesting walk.

The colours of the trees around the reservoir were amazing too.

Another interesting bridge at Postbridge

Some of the wildlife we met while enjoying the scenery

Such a lovely few days . . . we could have stayed longer but we will certainly return.

  1. I know it doesn't help, but you are not alone with your computer/ internet problems!
Thanks for sharing your Dartmoor photos. They've brought back many happy memories. I lived in the area way back before the invention of the WWW - we didn't even have a phone or TV - but lots of lovely long walks!

    1. Glad you enjoyed the pictures, Linda. It's a great place to 'get away from it all.'

  2. How fantastic to see that settlement. I spent many school trips in that area, Postbridge was especially popular with our teachers. We used to be all wrapped up in our winter coats (because apparently they never thought to go up there in the summer) imagining how awful life would have been for Bronze age settlers. Lovely photos.

    1. We were really lucky with the weather on our trip but I bet it could be a totally different place in the depths of winter!

  3. Glad you decided to get away. Sorry your Internet has been crappy though.
That river is really low! Funny how the bridge appeared in just the right place though.

    1. It was very well preserved considering it had been underwater for 40 years!

  7. Hi Suzanne - wonderful you were able to have a few days away ... and lovely to see Dartmoor again ... it was a year ago I was on my little tour round with Jenny Hobhouse. We were slightly to the east - but I'd love to visit your side. It's amazing what comes to light when the tide goes out, or lakes/reservoirs dry up ... what an amazing site to see - the Bronze Age settlement, stone circle and that postbridge (not quite as old) but wonderful it's still standing 700 years later ...

So pleased you had such a happy time ... and good luck with the internet challenges - cheers Hilary

  8. Beautiful!! But it also looks a little chilly. I'm not sure I'd survive the snap in the air.

  10. Lovely photos! I've never been to Dartmoor, but I'd like to visit one day. If you like great scenery, you should definitely come up to the Lake District sometime :)!
