If you are a regular visitor to my blog you may recall me mentioning a trip somewhere new. Well, a couple of weeks ago, I had the opportunity to visit Avebury in Wiltshire. Avebury henge and stone circles date back to prehistoric times. Within the henge is the largest stone circle in Britain and originally consisted of around 100 stones. There are actually three circles set within one another. It is quite an amazing sight and the photos don't really do it justice. If you ever get a chance to visit I can certainly recommend it. And you can easily wander around the stones and explore them at your leisure.
More information can be found here
See how close to the houses in the village the stones are
Happy weekend

DeleteVisited Stonehenge but not Avebury's site. Will have to do that on my next visit.
ReplyDeleteIt's worth it Alex.
DeleteSure would be neat to see in real life indeed.
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing the beautiful pictures Suzanne. Happy you had a fun time there.
ReplyDeleteI went to London for a class trip many years ago and we visited a place outside the city with ancient rock formations that wasn't Stonehenge. I can't remember what it was called though.
ReplyDeleteIt might have been Avebury, Tamara.
DeleteI visited Stonehenge once. I wonder how many hinges there are in England. There is something so haunting about these circles.
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure how many there are in total . . .maybe I'll try and find out.
DeleteIt's kind of sad that we don't know what Stonehenge and the circles at Avebury were made for. I think it must be religious, but who knows? I didn't realize there were other stone circles in Britain, so thanks for the info and have a great weekend!
ReplyDeleteI want to live where you live!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteAvebury looks so lovely. How cool that you got to see all this in person!
ReplyDeleteThanks everybody. Glad you enjoyed the pictures.
ReplyDeleteI traveled in Britain once many years ago and saw the Avebury stone circles and Stonehenge. Stone circles fascinate me. I wish I could travel back in time and see how they were used. Loved the photos!
ReplyDeleteI didn't know about the Avebury stone circles, thank you for sharing. This is why I love visiting blogs - you learn so much!
ReplyDeleteThanks to a wonderful B&B host, my husband, oldest daughter, and I visited Avebury in 2000. We were awed and amazed.
ReplyDeleteI also visited Stonehenge but not Avebury. Your pics are great!
ReplyDeleteIt looks like those were once the fence posts of an ancient pen or home. Fascinating.
