Thanks to Alex and this month's co-hosts
September is upon us already and here in the UK the days are getting shorter and the temperatures have dropped. It's also back to the day job for me today!
Working in school means that August is my time for a change of pace and the chance to explore new things. And this year in particular I was certainly in need of some downtime!
I've been lucky enough to have some time away, which was great. Uninterrupted time to read, write and relax. Perfect. Consequently, I have managed to finish polishing a manuscript and this is now ready to send out. Fingers crossed it is well received. I also started a new story which I am trying to plan and research. I am normally a real pantser so I am desperately trying to become better at planning! Any tips gratefully received . . .
This month's IWSG question is:
If you could pick one place in the world to sit and write your next story, where would it be and why?
For me it would probably be in a small cottage on Dartmoor. I try and visit a couple of times a year for a day or two. I love the expanse of countryside, walking on the moors, the air tinged with heather and bracken and cows, sheep and ponies to pass the time of day with! It can be bleak and foggy but that can be atmospheric in it's own right. I enjoy the quiet, I always work best without distraction, and the fresh air and views are inspiring.
Where would you choose?
I think I'm more of a plotter, but you know what they say about the best laid plans.... :)
ReplyDeleteAh yes very true . . .
DeleteWelcome back Suzanne, Living in the UK I can only say you're so right about darker evening and colder. The darker mornings have stopped my early morning strolls. Are we ever satisfied weather wise?
ReplyDeleteHave a good month and don't work too hard.
Yvonne.
We do like a good chat about the weather don't we?
DeleteCongratulations you have a story ready to send out! Sounds like a productive August.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Alex.
DeleteA small cottage, far away from the crowd would be perfect place for me to write.
ReplyDeleteI like quiet to write.
DeleteYou are in good company, Suzanne, with so many writers choosing that beautiful and wild area for their books. So very envious of you being able to have a cottage there 🌹
ReplyDeleteIt's an inspiring place. Alas, we only rent a cottage there from time to time but it is not too far from where we live so makes a good choice for a short break.
DeleteI actually like bleak and foggy weather. For some reason, it invigorates me. Of course, a lot of it might start to grate on my nerves.
ReplyDeleteLol! yes you could probably have too much, but inspiring for a while and a perfect excuse to cosy in and write.
DeleteIt sounds beautiful. I kinda wish there were pics. :-)
ReplyDeleteAnna from elements of emaginette
What a beautiful spot. :)
ReplyDeleteI'm definitely a pantser so I don't think I'd be much help!
ReplyDeleteCongrats on finishing your manuscript!
Since you're already in the UK, you have a huge number of perfect writing spots all around you. I'm so jealous.
ReplyDeleteThere are a lot of great places to visit.
DeleteSounds like a perfect spot. Getting one all polished up and ready to send is a win indeed. Congrats.
ReplyDeleteI love writing against a blank wall--scenic spots do put me in the mood for writing, but I don't end up writing much at all--instead spending time snoozing and reading.
ReplyDeleteThat can be a problem indeed!
DeleteCongrats on getting a manuscript ready to submit. I'm an organized person and wish I could outline my stories. The best I can do is to know the key plot points and outline as I go from there. Hope that helps you a bit.
ReplyDeletegood luck with submissions. I love Dartmoor. My folks live in Devon and we've often just jumped in the car and driven through, but for me, the Scottish countryside works wonders. It's like Dartmoor but on a larger, taller scale... :)
ReplyDeleteScotland is definitely bigger. Very beautiful and atmospheric too.
DeleteItaly or France.

I would love to visit that cottage! Sounds heavenly. Maybe one of these days.
ReplyDeleteGood luck with your submissions!!
The cottage sounds absolutely perfect!
ReplyDeleteCongrats on finishing your manuscript! Hope the submission process goes well. And how exciting about the new story! For planning, note cards are a good tool to have on hand, I feel. Helps you see the empty spots in a story, and what needs to be rearranged, fleshed-out, or discarded entirely. Good luck!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Heather. I will keep on trying to be a planner.
DeleteBleak and foggy! That's always beautiful inspiration for myou horror fiction! It's why I always look forward to Fall and Winter here in the U.S. Dartmoor sounds like a beautiful and peaceful setting.
