A day at sea...

I have been working very hard the last couple of days, trying to grab an hour here and there for editing between family stuff and visitors. I like to get up early when the house is quiet to work before everyone else starts moving about. The weather, sadly, hasn't been great and today is no exception! It is dark and gloomy more like November really so to wake me up this morning I flicked through a few holiday photos and reflected on my recent trip in the sunshine. Thought I would share a few random thoughts.

The first day of our cruise was spent at sea. Having never experienced this before I was unsure how I would feel. Would I feel sick? Would I be bored. Would I simply want to get off!? What I actually experienced was none of these, so I was unprepared for the total sense of freedom that washed over me.

As I stood on the bow of the ship with the wind in my hair and its gentle sting on my face, I felt myself relax. Of course there were lots of fellow passengers with me, but their presence was briefly erased and, for a moment, I felt alone with my thoughts. With no distractions I started to look closer, spotting things that I might so easily have missed. The way a seabird expertly flipped over the waves at the side of the ship, exposing a flash of white underbelly. It reminded me of a game of tag as a group of them danced and swerved missing each other by a feather! I felt almost tearful as I caught a glimpse of a dolphin skimming the waves, a mother with a baby at her side, they seemed to be having so much fun.

How easy it is for us to miss things in our busy daily lives? Sometimes it's not till we stop that we can truly appreciate the world around us. Its beauty, its frailty and even its harshness. I look out the window now I think, I'm warm, I'm dry, I've got a cuppa, and I start to feel more positive.

Yes I enjoyed the opportunity to step off the rollercoaster for a while, to relax away from phones, the Internet and the regular stresses of life. Sure when you get home all those things are still there, but for now I feel ready to return to my WIP with a new set of eyes. I hope the feeling stays with me - for a while at least.

I hope you all have found a few moments to relax and be inspired this summer.

  1. What an awesome way to relax.I hope you're still feeling the benefit and getting into your WIP again. It's winter in the Southern Hemp. but here in Fiji it's like Australian summer. My holiday is over in 2 days. I hope I get to write as much when I get back home.

  2. What a great photo. I have no problems noticing things, it's switching off and getting back to reality that I have problems with! :-)

  3. I think we all need to take a break at times to step back, relax and enjoy. It's good for the soul. I'm glad you had a good experience

  4. Ahh, this was nice. I'm so glad you got to not only step off the roller-coaster, but leave the amusement park behind! Thanks for sharing. It was a nice reminder. :-)

  5. We all need to recharge our batteries sometimes. It can be hard to stay inspired sometimes with a thousand things to do.

    1. Thanks, Heather, Teresa, Nick and Talli. I'm starting to realise I often get MORE time to write when I'm doing the 9-5 rather than on school summer break! Hope you are all having a great summer.

  7. You made me miss my life at sea. I agree with you, there is a wonderful sence of peace the ocean can bring and nothing more relaxing then being able to step away from every day stress.

  9. *jealous* I love cruising. I love writing whilst cruising but confess I don't get as much done as you'd expect from a person who is getting everything done for her and could write all day every day if she wished.

    1. Siv, it's wonderfully relaxing, I would recommend it!

Carol, I loved the view from the 'hut' on your blog. I thought they were quite similiar shots.

Patsy, I love it now too. I wish I could go again! Life's been so busy since I returned I'm ready for another break! I only managed a few random notes while away.
